| 1. | All the World is One | All the World is One
You can say that you stand apart Put a fence around your yard You can build a tall rampart and guard it with a gun You can dig yourself a moat Burn the bridge and burn the boat It won't matter that much, you know Because all the world is one, all the world is one You can march in a big parade Every Independence Day You can raise up your own flag and sing your own anthem It will ring out in the air With all the other anthems there Till the winds of the earth declare All the world is one, all the world is one Go and ask the Buddha when he's sitting under the tree Go ask Walt Whitman when he's looking out at the sea Ask Alan Shepard when he's standing up on the moon Staring at that pearl of blue Ask an atom in the breath you take Ask the water by the river bank Ask a strand of DNA--it's written in your blood One life running in your veins One light from one big bang You can try and separate it But all the world is one, all the world is one Go and ask the Buddha when he's sitting under the tree Ask Annie Dillard when she's up on Tinker Creek Ask Alan Shepard when he's standing up on the moon Staring at that pearl of blue You can take an outbound train Try and make a get-a-way You can ride off like John Wayne into the setting sun But earthlings don't leave town They just go round and round Until they figure out All the world is one, all the world is one All the world is one |

| 2. | Ordinary Day | Ordinary Day
I’m standing on a planet, breathing in the atmosphere Waves vibrating in the air are beating on my ears Invisible forces are holding me down I am spinning faster than the speed of sound I’m being bombarded by electromagnetic beams Flying through my body, shining red and blue and green A hundred million signals are racing through my brain I guess it must be just another ordinary day I live in eleven dimensions, seven more than I can see Where matter equals light and I am made of energy It’s all expanding from one microscopic grain I guess it must be just another ordinary day CHORUS: An ordinary day for me and Captain Kirk Every fact is so absurd In this science fiction world An ordinary day in the merry Land of Oz The psychedelic Mind of God The phantasmic Universe There’s a giant black hole in the center of the galaxy There’s a blueprint of my bones in every single cell of me And everything with weight is warping time and space I guess it must be just another ordinary day CHORUS: An ordinary day for Mad Hatters having tea Oompa Loompas making sweets In this Williewonkeality And ordinary day for alarm clocks that beep And shake me from my sleep So I can wake up in this dream Just another ordinary day |
||||
| 3. | Brand New | Brand New
She traveled here not long ago Straight from the great unknown And being from that land of dreams She seems to glow She has a lovely two-tooth smile She’s just barely two feet high And words are still beyond her reach She can't speak, but every day CHORUS: She'll say to you The world, the world is new And you'll look and you'll see it's true The world is all brand new She points at birdies in the sky Waves at people passing by And nearly everything she sees She tries to eat She makes you want to sing a silly tune And dance a jig around the room And when she giggles in your ear You hear your heart laugh too CHORUS: So proclaim the news that the world The world is new Every day, every day it’s true The world is all brand new |
||||
| 4. | Do You Really Want to Know | Do You Really Want to Know
The sun once went around the earth According to the holy church Which helped to reassure People that they were The center of the universe One day his holiness, the Pope Met a man with a telescope And said “hey Mr. Galilei What does your spyglass say? And the scientist spoke….he said CHORUS: It’s really quite amazing Entirely life-changing So let me ask before I show you— Do you really want to know? Emma read the bible for direction She said she was a child of heaven And that the human race Came from a higher place From the angels descended She wound up marrying her cousin He was a thinker of a husband Lost in thought, she’d find him And say “Charlie, what you writing?” Darwin looked up and said CHORUS: Do you really want to Let knowledge like a breeze In through the door of your belief Blow through the rooms and the corridors Knock cherished heirlooms to the floor That wind can raise the roof sometimes And leave you blinking at the sky So if you stare into this glass Beware that there’s no going back You’ll say “Sun Rise!” but it will refuse Instead, the earth itself will move And spin you ‘round from dawn to dawn Amid the wonder of it all Do you really want to know? |
||||
| 5. | Nobody Asks | Nobody Asks
Nobody asks to be born They just show up one day at life’s door Saying here I am world I’m a boy, I’m a girl I am gay, I am straight, I am poor But nobody asks to be born No one is given a say They’re just thrown straight into the fray The bell rings at ringside And someone yells “fight!” And some just end up on the floor Nobody asks to be born And no one’s assured Of a grade on the curve Or a friend they can trust Or a house where they’re loved And no life includes A book of how to Because nobody has lived it before So to all the living, be kind Bless the saint and the sinner alike And when babies arrive With their unholy cries Don’t be surprised by their scorn Because nobody asks to be born |
||||
| 6. | Church of the Earth | Church of the Earth
The ceiling is high To let your soul rise Up to the angels who teach you to fly And when you're weary of clouds It helps you back down And welcomes you home To this hallowed ground CHORUS: It's gilded in gold, gilded in rust For heaven below and heaven above The heaven we know here in this world Here in our holy church of the earth The windows are wide So darkness and light Mystery and Beauty meet you inside And there's room enough To hold all of us Who gather in friendship Gather in love CHORUS: Church of life Ancient and bright Life that inside us shines Life that we share This is our prayer That we may always find The heaven we seek Here at our feet Here in this sunrise In this heartbeat CHORUS: |
||||
| 7. | The Hat Song | The Hat Song
Blame it all on JFK, that's what my dad would say He never wore a hat and so that fashion went away And now my dad's old felt brim doesn't see the light of day But there's a little hat shop that just opened down the road A friend of men's heads everywhere--a little ray of hope Championing what Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra know She will adore ya in a Fedora You'll be the right guy in a Pork Pie You'll make her heart stir in a Homburg So don't ever be a hatless man You'll stand up straighter, find your swagger So suave and debonair, you'll have savoir fare And catch admiring eyes when you're walking by So don't ever be a hatless man It's time again for gentlemen, for A clean and press, a cut and shave And a good shoe shine Dignified men Civilized men It's time to put that nice hat Back on the president So together Let's get measured At that shop downtown You go black and I'll go brown We'll snap that brim in place Tap the rim and say Don't ever be a hatless man No, never be a hatless man |
||||
| 8. | The Garden | The Garden
The Cherub and the Virgin Mary The Buddha and the Garden Gnome All the back yard statuary Talked in Spring of how things grow Buddha said "from compassion" Mary said "the Lord above" Gnome replied "it must be magic" Cherub sighed "it must be love" And it rained then, in the Garden And they all stood round And witnessed in stillness And listened to that lovely sound Then St. Francis in the corner Spoke up at the gathering "Peace", he said, "is most important Peace for all the living things" And the stars burned, and the earth turned And the sun shone down And they knew then, in the garden Life was stirring in the warming ground And St. Francis stood entranced as Cherub watched, beguiled Gnome's hands lay on his sharp spade Mary gave thanks And Buddha smiled |

| 9. | Singing a Song | Singing a Song
We know this river always keeps flowing We will be rowing our whole lives long And we may never know where we're going But we can go there singing a song Just like a mother to a child she's holding Just like a soldier marching along Just like the faithful on Sunday morning Raising our voices, singing a song CHORUS: Eyes will shine but not as bright Arms will hold, but not as tight When a word is only spoken So give it feeling, give it rhyme Play it in four quarter time Sing it with a heart wide open Sing of the beauty right there beside you Bring it inside you, making you strong So that when trouble comes round to grieve you Still it will leave you singing a song CHORUS: And may the music of life overtake us Till angels mistake us for a heavenly throng And may that joyful sound be our shelter And find us together, singing a song We'll be together, singing a song |
||||
| 10. | Japanese Bowl | Japanese Bowl
I’m like one of those Japanese bowls That were made long ago I have some cracks in me They have been filled with gold That’s what they used back then When they had a bowl to mend It did not hide the cracks It made them shine instead So now every old scar shows From every time I broke And anyone’s eyes can see I’m not what I used to be But in a collector’s mind All of these jagged lines Make me more beautiful And worth a much higher price I’m like one of those Japanese bowls I was made long ago I have some cracks you can see See how they shine of gold |
||||
| 11. | Tandem Life | Tandem Life
We'll have coffee in the mornings And we'll always talk the time away As we're watching the day dawning on the lake We will wear skis through Januarys Raincoats beneath rainy April skies And we'll gaze at June upon a two-seated bike CHORUS: And when you move, I will too I'll lean left, I'll lean right with you Whatever road we ride And I will love you in our tandem life We'll have good friends and children Two beautiful baby boys We'll have laughter and sadness and joy And we will fly these streets When we find our feet Turning right together in time And I will be in your heart And you in mine CHORUS: |
||||
| 12. | The Rainbow | The Rainbow
Up and down the countryside Underneath a lucky sky Whistling a foolish song I've been walking madly on I bought into it long ago The story of the pot of gold But lately in my troubled sleep I'm haunted by another dream CHORUS: I dream I reach the end of the journey I've been on And all I finally find is a smiling leprechaun So I ask a wee impatiently, "tell me have you seen a pot of gold? And he says “have you seen the rainbow?” Have you seen the colors gleam And shimmer on a silent sea? Have you seen the colors shine Brightly in another's eyes? Have you seen a firefly, have you seen a lark? Have you seen the light burning in your beating heart? Have you seen the way the morning glows? Have you seen the red and green and gold? Tell me, have you seen the rainbow? Up and down the countryside You can see me hurry by Passing diamonds on the road Just to find a pot of gold CHORUS: |

| 1. | Nobody Knows I'm Famous | Nobody Knows I'm Famous
NOBODY KNOWS I’M FAMOUS
Nobody knows I’m famous So I have to go around and say it When I’m in public, I cover up my face with my hands So people don’t realize that they don’t know who I am I sent a picture to the paparazzi A nice 8 x 10 glossy of me And directions that show how to get to my home Along with a note that says “please stalk me” Nobody knows I’m famous I put an add in the singles column That says “supermodel wanted: I’m a famous white male but no one knows that it’s true I think it might be more convincing if I’m married to you” I wrote a book that says I’m something And I hand copies out for nothing And if you won’t take me up, I say I’ll throw in a buck, And make it two dollars if you ask me to sign it Nobody knows I’m famous No one knows that everybody’s talking all about me Unless they’re just pretending out of jealousy and envy I use the utmost of discretion to attract lots of attention But elude the recognition I deserve I’ve got big time tinted windows On my Jet Black Geo Metro I’ve got my own body guard but he gets bored a lot And so I hired a fanatic that he has to fight off So if you see me, take a picture Point at me and whisper I’m the Hollywood type Born for the lime light But I’m having a tough time creating a buzz because Nobody knows I’m famous |
||||
| 2. | Harry the Pharoah | Harry the Pharoah
HARRY THE PHARAOH
Harry was a pharaoh on the Nile In typical Egyptian style But Pharaoh Harry did not always go With the status quo One day discussing funerary rites And where to bury Harry when he dies He said “please don’t ever put my body in Some pyramid” He said CHORUS: Tell me, what would a dead man do With all that gold and all those jewels? You can keep his body mummified Make that dead man look alive But he ain’t ever gonna spend that loot Tell me, what would a dead man do With all that furniture and all that room? If you’re gonna build a house that nice You oughta give it to some living guy He could put it to a better use What would a dead man do? Now those were words Egyptians didn’t like ‘Cause they were in the business of the afterlife And those plans and preparations kept them quite preoccupied But he said keep that treasure in this life Taste that spice, drink that wine And eat those figs and pomegranates now I think you’ll find they tend to taste the best When you’re not dead CHORUS: So now no one recognizes Harry’s name And Pharaohs like King Tut get all the fame That old King Tut, now there’s a guy with one Heck of a grave |

| 3. | Driving With My Knee | Driving With My Knee
DRIVING WITH MY KNEE
I’m talking on the cell phone in my hand right now While the other hand's writing some directions down And I’m driving my car, wait! how can that be you ask me Hand number three? No… CHORUS: I’m driving with my knee, driving with my knee I’ve got both hands free, driving with my knee And I’m multi-tasking much more productively Driving with my knee I bought a tuna fish sandwich and some Krunch ‘n Munch But I don’t have to stop to have a little lunch I grab the sandwich with my hand, pick up a newspaper and read 'Cuz I’m driving with my knee CHORUS: Well I get so excited with the time I save That I give the police a friendly two-handed wave And I can tell by siren and the lights that they’re happy for me ‘Cuz I’m driving with my knee But then I start to think that I made a big mistake When they turn their car around and start coming my way So I step on the gas, still holding my sandwich and tea I'm speeding with my knee Speeding with my knee, speeding with my knee Now I’m up around 93 Eating my lunch while I’m escaping from the State Police Speeding with my knee CHORUS: |

| 4. | Dorothy's Pie | Dorothy's Pie
DOROTHY’S PIE
Vern said “hey Dorothy, what are you baking? It smells awfully good, I bet you must be making My favorite apple pie, honey, please tell me it’s true.” Dorothy said “yes Vern, but it’s not for you, dear I made it for the bake sale this Sunday at church, you hear So don’t go stealing a piece, now, Vernon, don’t you! He sulked over supper and settled for cookies But there at that pie on the stove he kept looking With the thought that some stranger would have it, which he could not stand He sat in his sad resignation all evening Moped off to bed, stared at the ceiling Then he started to smile, because Vern was devising a plan Now most folks who have met him insist that he seems like a reasonable guy So before I describe what he did, let me explain to you why…you see… CHORUS: After forty some years of her rhubarb and apple Still nothing on earth could make Vernon more happy Than the thought of a slice with a scoop of ice cream on the side And that’s why Vern had to buy Dorothy’s pie That Sunday Morning, quite coolly and calmly Vern shaved and buttoned his shirt nonchalantly Drove them to church, said his glory be’s and amens Afterwards Dorothy fetched her creation Went to the church hall to make her donation And Vern followed closely behind with his secret intent Passing by tables of brownies with walnuts Poppy seed pastries and cheese cakes and cream puffs He was unwavering, keeping his eye on the prize And when she arrived at the back where you check-in Vern stepped in with a deft interception Slapped down a five on the table, and said “that pie is mine!” Maybe you’ve heard of the old aphorism, “Love made a fool out of me” Well, Love made Vern one in just 40 minutes at 425 degrees CHORUS: And actually he says the ice cream isn’t needed Because every piece of Dorothy’s pie by itself is complete She bakes all kinds of sweetness inside |

| 5. | Dandelion | Dandelion
DANDELION
Life was good in my neighborhood With Mother Nature safely quarantined A perfect yard was my work of art A study in uninterrupted green Till uninvited you came by Brandishing your yellow smile Drifted in and wouldn’t go away Had a party on my lawn Making all the neighbors talk Then hung around like you were gonna stay I cursed and swore, prepared for war Madly engineering your demise Then headed for the garden store To buy my ammunition and supplies To protect the innocent My first attack was limited Precision guided missiles hit you hard But you came back a second time Laughing with your yellow eyes So I carpet bombed the whole dang yard CHORUS: Sometimes you have to stand up Sometimes you have to fight When Nature’s on your land It doesn’t have the right So put up your dukes It’s me or you Dandelion Then one day in my naiveté I declared that victory was near I did not foresee your insurgency And now you have been tormenting me for years And I’m inclined to think these days You’ll be growing on my grave Which I will still be trying to defend Because this in not a happy tale I am Ahab, you’re the whale And I remember how that story ends CHORUS: So put up your dukes I’m coming for your roots It’s me or you Dandelion |

| 6. | Snuffleupagus | Snuffleupagus
SNUFFLEUPAGUS
Hey, have you heard the latest from Big Bird? It sounds ridiculous, get a load of this He says he has a friend only known to him He calls him Aloysius Snuffleupagus Apparently when no one’s watching Is when the two get to talking He says he’s big and hairy, but not the least bit scary With great big lazy eyes, he swaggers side to side And has a longish nose, and walks a little slowly A peculiar invention, even for Mr. Henson Which makes me think, though I hate to say it That the creature is fabricated CHORUS: No, I don’t believe he really does exist Because I’ve never seen this Snuffleupagus It’s all in the big bird’s brain And besides, what kind of name is Snuffleupagus? I talked to Bert and Ernie, Cookie Monster’s worried Kermit the Frog agrees “it’s just a tragedy” Someone should check that bird, take his temperature Maybe he took a fall, or drugs or alcohol Or maybe Big Bird has some problems Well, if he does, hey, we all got ‘em But that does not mean that we all should get Our own imaginary, hairy psychologist CHORUS: I mean no ill intentions, but perhaps an intervention Is what our bird friend needs to restore his sanity So you round up the crew and I’ll go see how he’s doing Here he comes as a matter of fact Hey, did you see THAT? No, I don’t believe he really does exist Because I don’t think I’ve seen this Snuffleupagus But hey, I’m open-minded Let’s say I’m undecided |

Some things are made in: Bangladesh and India, Egypt and Malaysia Mexico and Vietnam, Guatemala and Hong Kong Philippines and Indonesia, Uruguay and South Korea Haiti and El Salvador, Pakistan and Ecuador and Thailand, Cambodia, Honduras, Mongolia Instead of China Now, American flags are typically not made in China. Most of them proudly display “Made in the U.S.A.” on their labels. People understandably consider it an outrage that Old Glory itself would be sewn anywhere but here in the proud land of the stars and stripes. However, if you need a flagpole for that flag, chances are you’ll find that it was made in… China, you make my shoes, my power tools, my rocking chair My no-stick pots and pans, my pajamas and my Teddy Bear Are made in China |

FAKE PLANT
Poor little fake plant, on the windowsill Sad because you have no chlorophyll So in the sun, you always tend to cry Because you cannot photosynthesize Poor little fake plant, you never were a seed You came straight out of the factory Your stem, your leaves, all petroleum derived You’ll never grow; you’ll always be that size You see the other plants around the room They get watered, fertilized and pruned But you just get a dusting now and then Oh how you wish that you were one of them It’s not just the attention that you crave But having your own code of DNA And feeling like your life is not a sham Earning that certain self-respect that you don’t have But hey little fake plant, don’t be so distraught Just remember you’ll outlive 'em all Or should I say you’ll last a longer time Because, well technically, you’re not alive Still you do look perfect to be sure And your beauty always will endure Yes, in so many ways you are ideal Except of course for the fact that you’re not real Nonetheless, you bring lots of joy When we pretend that you’re the real McCoy So cheer up fake plant, look on the bright side If you’re not living then, hey, you’ll never die |

| 1. | Stables | Play | Stables
In Bethlehem a manger waits
Long ago and so today Where hatred-weary people pray Love will come and lay there And so do countless stables stand In hearts as harsh as desert lands Rough shelters in the wind and sand That love may come and stay there Love that opens fists of hate Heaps up gold on beggars’ plates Love that shows a kindly face To enemies and strangers And the walls of stables tremble so When the winds of fear and judgment blow For a stable hopes in love alone And knows that love’s the answer O Love, the prophet’s only word The only lesson left to learn The only end of heaven’s work And the only road that goes there Love that sees with mercy’s eyes Holds its arms out open wide Threads its loom with separate lives And weaves them all together So may the lamps of stables glow Brightly that their light may go For miles in the darkness, so Love will find its way there |

| 2. | Christmas Morning | Play | Christmas Morning
There could be a blue kazoo, a pair of ruby shoes
A silky new, fetching red kimono A Pakistani rug, an Elvis Presley mug Or “The Very Best of Perry Como” There could be a handsome blonde, a Harry Potter wand Or little strips to help you quit snoring An anti-aging cream, a healthy self-esteem Waiting there for you on Christmas morning Then again, in light of life’s uncertainties You may not find a single one of these CHORUS: But guaranteed, underneath that tree Will be a brand new day begun The ones who love you, the turning earth And a great big shining sun A big old shining sun You might like a better job, a diamond ring from Bob A cabin place on Lake Okoboji You may pray to be released, or for Middle Eastern peace Or a sword of light, like Obi-Wan Kenobi And you can bring your list to Santa on your knees All he’s going to say is “we will see” CHORUS: And if that’s all you get for Christmas In spite of all your wishes You might hang your head and then go back to bed Or you might discover instead That when you wake and see the day And on the earth, you read your name And cut the gold ribbons around it You still might be surprised, and even realize That you got everything you wanted When you see, underneath that tree Another brand new day begun The ones who love you, the turning earth And a great big shining sun A big old shining sun That giant fireball, the biggest ornament of all Hung in the sky on Christmas Morning |

| 3. | The Houses of Winter | Play | The Houses of Winter
The houses of winter stand in a row
With chimneys that billow and windows that glow They play out their scenes for the snow drifts and icy streets at night Inside they are clearing their dishes away Watching the news and recounting the day And reading their children stories before their bedtime And when the rites of the evening are done The lights in the windows go dark one by one Until the inhabitants all fall asleep And the houses of winter become houses of dreams CHORUS: And they tend their fires with care And whisper a prayer For their dreamers’ safe-keeping As the cold blows wind at the doors And hangs icicle swords Where his captives are sleeping The houses of winter stand in the cold Fending off blizzards and murderous lows Biding their time till they breathe in the April breeze again Harboring lives with their walls and their roofs Watching like mothers watch over their broods Wakeful as monks meditating before the day begins And in the darkness, before the day starts They ponder the purpose in their furnace hearts And hope that the people for whom their hearts burn With love, the long winter, will love with their own hearts in turn CHORUS: And Orion holds court in the sky And night owls fly above frozen rivers And dreams, like chimney smoke rise From behind the closed eyes In the houses of winter |

I was swimming, seeking comfort; I was wrestling waves to find A boulder I could cling to, a stone to hold me fast Where I might let the fretful water of this river ‘round me pass And so I found an anchor, a blessed resting place A trusty rock I called my savior, for there I would be safe From the river and its dangers, and I proclaimed my rock divine And I prayed to it “protect me” and the rock replied CHORUS: God is a river, not just a stone God is a wild, raging rapids And a slow, meandering flow God is a deep and narrow passage And a peaceful, sandy shoal God is the river, swimmer So let go Still I clung to my rock tightly with conviction in my arms Never looking at the stream to keep my mind from thoughts of harm But the river kept on coming, kept on tugging at my legs Till at last my fingers faltered, and I was swept away So I’m going with the flow now, these relentless twists and bends Acclimating to the motion, and a sense of being led And this river’s like my body now, it carries me along Through the ever-changing scenes and by the rocks that sing this song CHORUS: God is the river, swimmer So let go |

| 5. | Green | Play | Green
When winter’s gray is on the sky
Rust upon the leaves that lie Red on the last few berries clinging Brown on the branch where the bitter wind’s singing Even when white obscures the scene Still, in winter, there is green Waving defiant pine tree boughs Cedar needles, stubborn and proud Hiding inside the seeds of summer And deep in the root where it sleeps undercover Patiently waiting there unseen In the winter, there is green Death may raise its voice today O but life will have its say Speaking in lovers and in children In poets pens and philosopher’s visions Life is a planet’s daring dream Earth’s devotion, spoken in green So keep it in your winter store Hang its garland ‘round the door Grant to your heart its hopeful promise Fashion a wreath for its blessing upon us Winter brings browns and grays indeed But when it comes, remember green |

| 6. | Heavenly Child | Play | Heavenly Child
Once, such a long time ago
I left all that I know The things of kingly life The ease of my warm palace home The toils of my throne To seek a heavenly child He came to me in a dream Full of wisdom he seemed Full of goodness and light And hope to rid the world of its woes And so I knew I must go To find the heavenly child There’s only so much a king can do To feed and clothe his multitudes And give them comfort for their cares And oh, they cry for justice and for love I thought this child from above Might be an answer to their prayers It was cold, and the traveling was hard As we followed that star Many long desert miles There were times we would mutter “what’s the use” And we said we were fools To seek the heavenly child And then, one fair evening, we found A simple stable near a town A mother cradling her own And lo, the boy was beautiful to see A child heavenly indeed We gave him frankincense and gold But that was a long time ago… And still the child haunts my heart But I’ve not returned afar To look into his eyes For in the faces of this very kingdom In every daughter and son I see the heavenly child I see a heavenly child |

| 7. | The Longest Night | Play | The Longest Night
Light a candle, sing a song
Say that the shadows shall not cross Make an oblation out of all you’ve lost In the longest night Gather friends and cast your hopes Into the fire as it snows And stare at God through the dark windows Of the longest night Of the year CHORUS: A night that seems like a lifetime If you’re waiting for the sun So why not sing to the nighttime And the burning stars up above? Come with drums, bells and horns Or come in silence, come forlorn Come like a miner to the door Of the longest night For deep in the stillness, deep in the cold Deep in the darkness, a miner knows That there is a diamond in the soul Of the longest night Of the year CHORUS: Maybe peace hides in a storm Maybe winter’s heart is warm And maybe light itself is born In the longest night In the longest night Of the year |

| 8. | Make My Christmas Day | Play | Make My Christmas Day
Set the Santa Candle out, my dear
On the toilet, where we put him every year He shrank to half his height In the heat that summertime Now he’s shorter and he’s fatter Like some sort of Buddha Santa Make those Tom and Jerry’s extra sweet I’ll go and get the artificial tree And those boxes downstairs Of Christmases we’ve shared We’ll play Bing Crosby and unpack All the days of love we’ve had and CHORUS: Hang the years like ornaments On the tree and say Would you marry me again? Please say yes That would really make my Christmas day The electric snowflakes really have six sides Because I brought back that one with only five Set out the plates that say noel Plug in the mice that play the bells And Christmas cookies sure sound great Honey let’s start gaining weight Let’s watch the old home movies and old slides And wonder at the way the time goes by Sing Jingle Bells once more And dance around the floor We’ll raise our matching Santa glasses To the days of love we’ve had, and CHORUS: |

| 9. | My Soul | Play | My Soul
There are a hundred billion snowflakes swirling in the cosmic storm
And each one is a galaxy, a billion stars or more And each star is a million earths, a giant fiery sun High up in some sky, maybe shining on someone And deep inside a snowflake, I am floating quietly I am infinitesimal, impossible to see Sitting in my tiny kitchen in my tiny home Staring out my window at a universe of snow But my soul is so much bigger than the very tiny me It reaches out into the snowstorm like a net into the sea Out to all the lovely places where my body cannot go I touch that beauty and embrace it in the bosom of my soul And so brief and fleeting is this tiny life of mine Like a single quarter note in the march of time But my soul is like the music, it goes back to ancient days Back before it wore a human face, long before it bore my name Because my soul is so much older than the evanescent me It can describe the dawn of time like a childhood memory It is a spark that was begotten of the darkness long ago What my body has forgotten, I remember in my soul So we live this life together, my giant soul and tiny me One resembling forever, one like smoke upon the breeze One the deep abiding ocean, one a sudden flashing wave And counting galaxies like snowflakes, I would swear we were the same Oh my soul belongs to beauty, takes me up to lofty heights Teaches sacred stories to me, sanctifies my tiny life Lays a bridge across the ages, melts the boundaries of my bones Paints a bold eternal face on this passing moment, oh my soul |

| 10. | Looking for the Dove | Play | Looking for the Dove
I remember she was here
It seemed to be her place to rest Until a flood of blood and tears Washed away her nest Was it when we felt afraid? Or when we became us and them? Or when the plans of war were laid? Can you tell me, was it then CHORUS: That the bird of peace escaped our hands To find an olive branch Of kindness and of love Flew away, leaving us to stand Scanning the horizon And the dreary skies above Looking for the dove I’ve seen hawks and I’ve seen crows And I’ve heard their angry cries I’ve seen buzzards flying low But haven’t heard her lullaby But we were foolish to believe She’d be an easy bird to keep We gave her a nest, a bed to rest But didn’t know that even though she dreams The dove of peace can never sleep So the bird…(CHORUS) Come back to us Come back to us Sweet Dove |

| 11. | Magical World | Play | Magical World
Tulips that spring Abracadabra! from gardens in May
Blackbirds that sing glad incantations to summon the day Babies that grow Presto! into sweet boys And little laughing twirling girls Such are the facts of life in this magical world A dazzling place where life can be hard but it’s hard to complain When sunbeams change to diamonds on water and rainbows in rain And light up the moon, which makes lovers swoon as they Stroll down Les Champ Elysees “Je t’aime”, they say with a kiss in this magical world Skyrocket smiles in July and tender December noels As old Father Time is ceaselessly, endlessly, spinning his spell The days and the years appearing from nowhere and Vanishing into thin air Lovely and rare, each a magnificent pearl A shimmering flower unfurled The gift of a magical world |

| 12. | Where is the Light? | Play | Where is the Light?
When it’s late December, dark and cold Where is the light?
When old man year is bending low Where is the light? When the sun runs off to bed too soon Where is the light? And there’s nothing but a skinny moon Where is the light? CHORUS: Where is the light? Where is the light? Where is the light? Oh… The light’s inside of me When it’s dark each morning when I rise Where is the light? And it’s dark when my eggs are fryin’ Where is the light? And it’s dark when off to work I go Where is the light? And it’s dark again when I get home Where is the light? CHORUS: It’s in my skin and in my bones In my heart and in my soul That light of life, so bright and golden Like a summer day When the sun goes missing in the sky It is rising in my eyes Chasing all that winter gloom away I’m burning bright like kerosene Where is the light? I’m twinkling like the Pleiades Where is the light? I’m dancing like a candle flame Where is the light? I’m flaming like a fruit flambé Where is the light? CHORUS: (2X) This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine! |
This is a collection of original songs on various themes of the holiday season, some more strongly related to it than others. "Midwinter" is an old word for winter solstice, the longest night of the year in the northern hemisphere, when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun. One may say that Midwinter gave birth to the holiday season, with its love of light and countless rituals born of generations of people enduring the cold winter darkness.

| 1. | Ocean Mary | Play | Ocean Mary
There’s a street in a river town
And on that street is Mary’s house By the house is a deep ravine And running there is a magic stream Laughing over the sand and rocks It runs the length of Mary’s block Another mile to the riverside And a thousand more to the ocean wide Now, down in that ravine one day By the water, Mary lay Put her hand in the shallow stream And Mary had a magic dream She imagined that, inside her, stirred All the waters of the earth Every puddle, every creek And every one of the seven seas She could feel the fishes roam In her fingers and her toes And in her chest, the Gulf Stream flow Now, ever since her dream that day People say that Mary’s changed But they sympathize when they suppose It must be strange to be the ocean She senses when the salmon swim And hurricanes lick her skin Asia tickles her left arm And the moon above tugs her heart Her front is day, her back is night She recollects the dawn of life Tidal waves run up her spine And lightning tingles when it strikes She can feel the fishes roam In her fingers and her toes And in her chest, the gulf stream flow And all this happened, so it seems Because of Mary’s magic stream But some will say that lakes and wells And even rain can cast a spell And every water drop you ask Tells a tale of oceans vast So careful when you take a drink There’s magic in the kitchen sink |

| 2. | Awake | Play | Awake
Clouds are swift
Rocks are ancient Mountains are high, oceans great Winds are restless Trees are patient And you my child are awake Waves are crashing Rivers churning Planets twirling, stars ablaze Storms are raging Atoms whirling And you my child are awake CHORUS: To perceive these wondrous things To count the beats of a blackbird’s wings To tell a story and dance and sing All the splendors Of creation Are very happy that you came Because they needed Someone to see them And you my child are awake CHORUS: Seeds are hopeful Dewdrops fleeting Oak trees are crooked, Redwoods straight And they are not known To the sleeping But you my child are awake You my child are awake You my child |

| 3. | Elijah Jones | Play | Elijah Jones
I saw a gravestone of a man long dead
His name was Elijah Jones and his gravestone read “I walked this good earth, I had my time And now it’s your turn, your chance at life” Now most epitaphs speak of the deceased But this dead man’s words seemed to refer to me And so that evening at that gravesite I pondered the meaning of a chance at life We’re like sparks rising from some great fire We flicker brightly, then we expire And for that fleeting glow, we pay a price Of pain and sorrow for a chance at life But that fire burns on, it does not cease It made Elijah and it made me And I like to think that, on the day he died Its burning flames gave him comfort and light And if I were an angel above the clouds Singing God’s praises in a shining gown I’d dream of rain storms on summer nights And trade my wings for a chance at life I’d dream of rainstorms on summer nights And trade my wings for a chance at life I saw a gravestone of a man long dead His name was Elijah Jones |

Though below me, I feel no motion
Standing on these mountains and plains Far away from the rolling ocean Still my dry land heart can say I’ve been sailing all my life now Never harbor or port have I known The wide universe is the ocean I travel And the earth is my blue boat home Sun, my sail and moon, my rudder As I ply the starry sea Leaning over the edge in wonder Casting questions into the deep Drifting here with my ship’s companions All we kindred pilgrim souls Making our way by the lights of the heavens In our beautiful blue boat home I give thanks to the waves upholding me Hail the great winds urging me on Greet the infinite sea before me Sing the sky my sailor’s song I was born upon the fathoms Never harbor or port have I known The wide universe is the ocean I travel And the earth is my blue boat home |

| 6. | The Play | Play | The Play
When I go outside at night
And look up and the stars are bright Sometimes I lay on the ground And imagine that the sky is down And if the earth should then let go I’d fall into the stars below I’d fall into the stars below And when I see the red sunset In it’s quiet splendor, I reflect That that sun’s not going down at all But the earth is turning somersaults And through a sunlit sea it trails And we are on that great big whale We’re riding on that great big whale CHORUS: When I try to grasp the simple fact of this existence And think of all the fantasies and fairytales and wishes None strike me as more unlikely or magnificent than this is Hands and faces seen up close Galaxies through telescopes Crimson hillsides in the fall And more astounding than them all Are pondering minds with eyes that see These are deep mysteries Deep mysteries CHORUS: Like a strange, enchanting play of impossible dimensions The setting and the stage run light-years in all directions And the breathless scenes and the storyline defy comprehension And when I think of all the roles In this production, all I know is I’m in the cast, but could it be I’m also in a front row seat To sit in my amazement, gazing To ooh and ahh and sigh and say My, what a wonderful play My, my, my, my... |

| 7. | Earth Town Square | Play | Earth Town Square
Once, we were lonely islands
Divided by horizons A hundred thousand tribes surviving, scattered far and wide Hearing only stories Of distant territories Peering out across the miles between our shorelines Then, we harnessed nature’s forces Straddled backs of horses Waging wars and crossing borders as our numbers grew We bought and sold and traded Oceans were navigated And fates entwined by rails and roads and telephones, and soon We cracked the code of flight Spoke via satellite at the speed of light, and Now, it’s feeling like a small town With six billion people downtown At a little sidewalk fair In Earth Town Square There are Germans selling Audis Filled with gasoline from Saudis To Australians sipping Kenyan coffee in their Chinese shoes Argentines are meeting Mongols Over french fries at MacDonald’s And the place looks strangely tiny when you see it from the moon And there’s music in the park, kalimbas and guitars Bagpipes and sitars Now, it’s feeling like a small town With six billion people downtown Even Babel can’t compare To Earth Town Square And as each hour goes by, ten thousand more arrive And the din gets louder on Main Street Where you can watch downtown boom And wonder if we’ll make room For everybody there In Earth Town Square |

Skyblaster Man
There in the lights of the midway he stands Mustache and tattoos, caught in the thralls of his carnie dance Entrancing passers-by, daring that they take A turn on his dangerous ride Making them see that the magic that he commands Makes them feel like they’re flying Skyblaster man Skyblaster man Taking the tickets they have in their hands Their faces like many in the towns along his carnival caravan Dollar thrill-seekers and brief death-defeaters who Come from their comfortable lives To be spun around, and turned upside down And reminded that they’re alive Skyblaster man To be convinced you’re alive It’s a mighty big job for a three minute ride So he brings his powers to bear As if he’s in prayer While they’re in the air And when they land They stand in a daze and stagger and laugh And he knows at that time, by the look in their eyes that a few understand But will they remember, he wonders as he Very carefully helps them all down As if in his care, he’s aware of the much greater Perils of life on the ground Skyblaster man |

A knock Then next to the bed Does my frightened young daughter appear, and say “I’m scared, Papa A nightmare woke me up and I can’t sleep Could I sleep with Mama and you?” “Crawl in my darling It’s nice and warm, and there’s plenty of room And that dream won’t be harming you here” And so we sleep And hold back the demons and ghosts till the morning arrives They seem to flee more easily Faced with a foe like the three of us there Side by side “Of course my darling Just sqeeze in between us, here’s a pillow for you And don’t worry now darling, don’t fear” The mother we run to, the lover we cling to The bedside we seek in the night It’s a walk down the hall that we make when we’re small And we make for the rest of our lives And at dawn, with our clothes We put on our best brave faces and go our separate ways And hold fast to the hope That at the day’s end, we can put them away again And hear someone say “Crawl in my darling It’s nice and warm and there’s plenty of room And bad dreams won’t be harming you here Crawl in my darling Just squeeze in between us, here’s a pillow for you And don’t worry now, darling, don’t fear” |

There is music on CDs
Magazines of all kinds And computers and TVs For amusing the mind But in the late days of the summer Nothing nearly compares To just seeing each other At the Brown County Fair You can meet Lawrence Little And taste his prize pickles, home grown And hear Grace play the fiddle Who’s just seven years old There are girls boys are teasing In the carmeled apple air Of the warm August evening At the Brown County Fair If the stock market fails you Give the ring toss a try And if loneliness ails you Stick around for awhile There’s a band playing later And you can dance in a square Promenade and greet your neighbor At the Brown County Fair And if you’re tired of walking You can sit with your slush And pass the time people watching And you might fall in love With the face of a stranger The young and old strolling there Across the unhurried acres Of the Brown County Fair There’s a light inside of people Sometimes seen in the eyes And it hides like a recluse In these complicated times But some say that it shines out A bit more easily there And for just five bucks, you can find out At the brown county fair Some say that it shines out A bit more frequently there For just five bucks, you can find out At the Brown County Fair |

I fly sometimes
Through the frozen trees In the winter woods In their robes of white Chanting silently In the winter woods Like a forest abbey choir Whispering hymns of snow and ice In Excelsis to the cold And Hosanna to the sky Hosanna And holy trees They know when I’m In the winter woods And they bid me to sing And I comply In the winter woods But I stumble in my turn Because I cannot find the words In that church of birch and pine The only word that comes to mind Is “beautiful” Like a forest abbey choir Whispering hymns of snow and ice In Excelsis to the cold And Hosanna to the sky Hosanna So quietly I sing “beautiful” in the winter woods And the trees agree They all agree In the winter woods We all agree In the winter woods Amen. Amen. |

Maggie Jane has a family
And makes a good salary Her life is quite ordinary Except for her astronaut dreams They happen when she is sleeping They happen when she’s awake They come like abductors who sneak in And carry poor Maggie away CHORUS: Suddenly Maggie Jane is floating high in space Up among the super novi and the bright nebulae And the earth is just another point of light, far away Keep busy say the doctors Clean house, turn on the TV And they give her pills to stop her From having her astronaut dreams But the Universe still keeps calling And haunting her daily routine And defenses are slim when the light years creep in And then steal her away beyond reach CHORUS: And that world of her work and her bills and her children Is a tiny place in a remote solar system And the size and the scope of the space where she floats Is so big, so very big So if you run into Maggie And meet with an eerie stare Don’t think she’s cold if you get no hello Because Maggie Jane may not be there |

Mr. Isaac Newton tested everything
Poked and prodded, then said “Solid things are as real as they seem” Mr. Albert Einstein pondered light and speed And with his mind’s eye, declared “oh my, This is a world of dreams” When we investigate the highest heavens They seem to race away faster than we can follow And when we penetrate the heart of atoms We find there something strangely resembling Nothing at all In the smallest measure of anything at hand Entities of energy are alive in a whirling dance Even our own bodies are not as we perceive But made of the same stuff our thoughts are made In this world of dreams So do we live and move amidst illusions? Has what we’re seeing fooled us And only exists in our minds? And what are we to do with such conclusions? For what cannot come true in a world of a Mystical kind? Mr. Albert Einstein woke one day from sleep To arise, to his surprise, in a world of dreams So as we move closer, the farther we must reach We may fight for what we like, but this is a world of dreams We may feel that this is real, but this is a world of dreams Or proclaim no, it can’t be so But this is a world of dreams |

Scatterbrains are just the same as regular people
Except for some impairments they display Like seldom remembering your name Even if they are in your family When the phone rings at home, sometimes they open the Refrigerator door and say hello They load washing machines with clean clothes That they just unloaded from the dryer It may seem sad, you may think that they have gone mad But it’s just the peculiar ways of the scatterbrain They put stuff like coffee cups and purses and grocery bags On the top of the car and drive away And notice this some moments later When they brake or take a corner And they spend time trying to find The glasses they’re wearing Or the keys that they are holding in their hand And when they find them they call themselves bad names like You stupid moron or you idiot or you loser It may seem sad, like a tragic and cruel handicap But it’s just the peculiar ways of the scatterbrain There’s one now in the kitchen, he’s sweeping the floor But he needs a new broom so he runs to the store But in the car, on the way, he hears a new song he likes So he stops to buy the record but he runs into Mike And they talk over coffee until Mike has to go And our man can’t remember just why he left home So if you see one of these Directionless people Maybe you can offer them a hand Instead of just pointing and laughing But if you do, well, who could blame you? It may seem sad, but actually it’s not that bad It’s just the peculiar ways The truly inscrutable daze The thick intellectual haze The look in the eyes kind of glazed The life like a mouse in a maze Of the scatterbrain |

I’ve played it out in my head so many times before
I’m fixing dinner at home and there’s a knock on the door He holds the check out in his hand Oh my God, it’s Ed MacMahon! CHORUS: Every night I pray to God above me To send his love along with lots of money Because in my heart I feel him calling me to Easy Street Swimming down at the Y for exercise is hard When I know God could provide me with a pool in my yard And I could meet my deeper needs With a couple thousand more square feet CHORUS: A masterbath with double sinks would help me out for sure A TV screen as high as me might be the only cure For this middle class depravity, the sacrifices I endure Deliver me Oh Lord! And so I dream of the day when all my worries are gone The lotteries and the sweepstakes, man, I play ‘em all And though my faith has made me strong These days I’m barely hanging on CHORUS: Grant us peace oh God and feed the hungry And don’t forget to give me lots of money Because I believe you have a plan for me On Easy Street |

That’s not how the story goes
When do heroes play it safe? You’ve got a job and a family-o But not a single golden egg And a pocket full of possibilities Hey ho Jack, when Will you plant them Magic beans? Jack, Oh Jack, what scared you so? Made you hide those beans and run Did you hear the rumors-o Of the fee, fi, fo, and fum? Were you frightened of the things you Just might see Hey ho Jack-o If you plant those Magic beans? Jack, it’s not too late you know To sow those seeds of fate So throw them out your wind-o Go to sleep, and when you wake Things will happen Things you never dared to dream But they won’t happen Unless you plant them Magic beans |

| 13. | The Introvert Song | Play | The Introvert Song
People bug me when they interrupt me with calls
And unannounced visits And on top of that when they chat about nothing at all And I ask “what is it?” I do have a lot to do Can you return at two? I will not be here by then Just leave what you need me for On a note on my door So I can ignore it my friend You may think it maddening when you ring my answering machine And I’m right there listening But I’d like to hire my own secretary who's mean Someone who says things like “Mr. Mayer can’t be reached He is not in, you see He’s in a meeting till ten I suppose I could take your name Who are you anyway? Please never call here again If I see you before you see me in the hall Then while you’re not looking I’ll find the nearest bathroom and hide in the stall Till I think the coast is clear Then I will take a peak And, if you’re gone, I’ll sneak Back to my private abode There in my world of one I have a lot more fun Because people bug me you know I do have a lot to do Can you return at two? I will not be here by then Just leave what you need me for On a note on my door So I can ignore it my friend (repeat first verse) |

| 1. | Fall | Play | Fall
What if the highest destination
Of any given human life Was not a place that you could reach if You had to climb Wasn’t up above like heaven So no need to fly at all What if to reach the highest place You had to fall Fall, like a drunkard on your face Like a parachuter jumping from a plane Fall, like an astronaut from space Or an acrobat from making a mistake And what if all the sages Talking about realms out of reach Would memorize the pages Of gravity What if getting to the highest place is Like learning what you know Or like going to where you are now Like coming home Fall, like Adam falling down From the strange, unearthly angels whence he came Fall, finding a way of trusting in the ground As if the highest and the lowest places Are the same What if the highest destination Wasn’t up above at all What if, to reach the highest place You had to fall What if you had to fall |

| 2. | John's Garden | Play | John's Garden
Farmer John wandered back
And when he reached the pumpkin patch, began to speak He said “the weather’s getting colder Summer’s over and it’s almost Halloween That’s the day, the reason you were raised When everything about your life will change You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you’ll be A bright lamp burning in the darkness But remember that candle shines for only the briefest time In a jack-o-lantern’s heart” The pumpkins held a meeting then Some were very apprehensive and afraid “Could this really happen to us? What could be the meaning?” is what they were saying “This is home, it’s all we’ve ever known” Then one bold, outspoken pumpkin spoke He said “I don’t need eyes to see , it sounds like a lie to me I like it just fine here in John’s garden And remember that candle shines for only the briefest time In a jack-o-lantern’s heart” There is much to ask and to ponder in the pumpkin patch When imposing old October shows up at last Then a pumpkin from the farther end Who had been silent up till then Over the commotion, said “What would you rather have my friends A chance to shine, or die here on the vine? The better way seems very plain to me You will have eyes to see, and for that night, you’ll be A bright lamp burning in the darkness And maybe that candle shines for only the briefest time In a jack-o-lantern’s heart Oh, but one goblin’s smile should make it all well worth while You know you might even see the starlight And knowing that time is brief, makes it that much more sweet When you have a jack-o-lantern’s heart” |

| 3. | Like a Mountain | Play | Like a Mountain
Driving near Mount Shavano
It seemed to be looking me over Feeling that gaze down below I pulled the car off on the shoulder Staring at the rock and the sky My heart began beating more slowly Till I lost track of time And forgot where it was I was going CHORUS: Suddenly, I saw life from the brink I watched an age pass me by like a wink For just one heartbeat, I believe I could think Like a mountain Mountain, we measure our lives By tens and by twenty years only Teach us the ways of a million-year mind What a million-year heart could be hoping CHORUS: And oh, if I’m wise I will strive and I’ll pray To turn that one tick in time into a day And lead this poor picture-flash life in that way Like a mountain |

Edgar Allen Poe had it
In his tell tale heart It’s the finest time to strike Said Napolean Bonaparte Inmates make their break into it Cavemen make their art Spy planes fly and spelunkers hunker Somewhere in the dark Batman catches criminals in the dark of night Saving Gotham City from evil designs Darkness, lovers love in and Dreamers tend to like And if you think you’re neither one Well, in the dark, that’s just what You might become Some celestial bodies like to Strut their stuff alot But we know Mr. Black Hole is the Big boy on the block King Tut looked pretty comfy In that old dark tomb What’s good for an Egyptian mummy Might be right for you What’s the fun relying on something you can see? That’s just so passe when you run toward the light Why not make a dangerous tryst with mystery? It’s a downright frightening hole Watch your head Down you go Larry lost his inhibitions Sally felt a spark Jacob saw a mystic vision Somewhere in the dark Black cats eke out a descent living Monsters make it far You might find what you’ve been missing Somewhere in The Dark |

| 5. | Holy Now | Play | Holy Now
When I was a boy, each week
On Sunday, we would go to church And pay attention to the priest He would read the holy word And consecrate the holy bread And everyone would kneel and bow Today the only difference is Everything is holy now Everything, everything Everything is holy now When I was in Sunday school We would learn about the time Moses split the sea in two Jesus made the water wine And I remember feeling sad That miracles don’t happen still But now I can’t keep track ‘Cause everything’s a miracle Everything, Everything Everything’s a miracle Wine from water is not so small But an even better magic trick Is that anything is here at all So the challenging thing becomes Not to look for miracles But finding where there isn’t one When holy water was rare at best It barely wet my fingertips But now I have to hold my breath Like I’m swimming in a sea of it It used to be a world half there Heaven’s second rate hand-me-down But I walk it with a reverent air ‘Cause everything is holy now Everything, everything Everything is holy now Read a questioning child’s face And say it’s not a testament That’d be very hard to say See another new morning come And say it’s not a sacrament I tell you that it can’t be done This morning, outside I stood And saw a little red-winged bird Shining like a burning bush Singing like a scripture verse It made me want to bow my head I remember when church let out How things have changed since then Everything is holy now It used to be a world half-there Heaven’s second rate hand-me-down But I walk it with a reverent air ‘Cause everything is holy now |

| 6. | Charlie Porter | Play | Charlie Porter
My name is Charlie Porter
I was a union soldier In ‘61, I signed up to fight And it was a great adventure But I have to tell you Not the fairytale I had in mind And when General Lee surrendered And victory finally arrived I heard no one hoot or holler No hip-hurray for the stars and stripes We only cried Back when it started Proud and foolish hearted I thought I had a taste for rebel blood But we were only children They killed us and we killed them And the misery and the dying made us numb By then, holding back the sorrow Was kind of like holding back the tide The men did not hoot or holler Nor hip-hurray for the stars and stripes We only cried And oh, victory seems hollow At the price of half a million lives A cold and weary stillness follows You hear no hip-hurray for stars and stripes You only cry |

They say the sights and sounds down in Africa
Seem like ones you’ve seen and heard before Even though you arrive For the very first time You have a sense of returning They say there is a dream down in Africa Dreamt about 5 million years ago It’s a dream to survive A dream of standing upright And setting out on a new life CHORUS: So I say to my hands, can you remember Africa? And I say to my feet, do you remember Africa? Do you remember? Do you remember Africa? You can hear a song down in Africa Between the eastern mountains and the coast It’s a song that you know Rising up from the bones And it’s telling your story There is a human heart born in Africa Beating now for eons, it is your own A tenacious, ancient will Quite alive inside you still And it’s dreaming on Dreaming on CHORUS: |

| 8. | Now Touch the Air Softly | Play | Now Touch the Air Softly
Now touch the air softly, Step gently. One, two... I’ll love you till roses Are robin’s-egg blue; I’ll love you till gravel Is eaten for bread, And lemons are orange, And lavender’s red. Now touch the air softly, Swing gently the broom. I’ll love you till windows Are all of a room; And the table is laid, And the table is bare, And the ceiling reposes On bottomless air. I’ll love you till Heaven Rips the stars from his coat, And the Moon rows away in A glass-bottomed boat; And Orion steps down Like a diver below, And Earth is ablaze, And Ocean aglow. So touch the air softly, And swing the broom high. We will dust the gray mountains, And sweep the blue sky; And I’ll love you as long As the furrow the plow, As However is Ever, And Ever is Now. |

We have been weighed down by sadness like a stone
And we have yearned, we have yearned And we have sometimes felt so utterly alone While we turn, while we turn And we’ve been stricken by the wonder of it all Stricken dumb, stricken dumb And we have sometimes felt so faint we want to fall Overcome, but all in all CHORUS: I’d say this year in flight together has been fun What say we make one more circle around the sun We have raised our fists in anger and we’ve tried To work it out, work it out That we need each other, we cannot deny There is no doubt, there is no doubt So let us weave another dream in outer space While we’re turning, while we’re turning On this planet home that holds our human race We still are learning, but all in all CHORUS: I’d say this year in flight together has been a good, good one What say we make one more circle One more circle One more circle around the sun |
Mayer's Clean, percussive & melodic guitar style, clear, rich vocals and refreshing, intelligent lyrics, combined with a warm, personable approach to his music make him stand out among the best of the singer/songwriters on the scene today... | 1. | Could You Be | Play | Could You Be
Could you be a window
In a darkened hall To give a passing soul A way of seeing through the wall And people stop in front of you And into you they peer Uncertain what they see because You’re not exactly clear? Could you be a lighthouse Standing on a shore Meant to send a light out To the sailor in a storm But even though you show your light Not a boat can tell You didn’t know you’re not supposed to Shine it on yourself? Are you a bell that hasn’t tolled? A drum that hasn’t rolled? A word of hope unsaid? A declaration never read? Could you be? Could you be a siren Made to raise your voice But sinking in the silence Afraid of making noise Even though the enemy is flying overhead Even though the fire is continuing to spread? Are you a spear afraid of flight? A constellation afraid of night? A principle unknown? A pilgrim holding on to home? Could you be? A flare afraid to burn? A wheel unfree to turn? A compass shunning north In a vessel straying way off course? Could you be? Could you be a lighthouse Standing on a shore That the lost are looking for? |

| 2. | The Birthday Party | Play | The Birthday Party
I saw the Buddha open up his eyes
One Sunday morning Say he’s invited to a party for Christ And he must be going He heaved himself up with a groan, standing slowly Came down those steps of stone, and asked me Where to catch the next train to Jerusalem In India he sang with Hindus as they prayed By the Ganges when the dawn came Near Arabia, he saw Mohammed on the train And asked if he would join him Passing those teeming towns, they talked for hours All about the truth and how it’s discovered Trading bits of news and stories from these thousand years Saying “great idea, this party for Jesus” Then Mohammed said “hey Buddha, it’s great to see ya” Finding the place with the help of Abraham Waving from the doorway They greeted faces from a thousand holy lands Present day and all ages (always) Everybody talking, laughing, fiercely debating Saying how desperately the world is changing Then somebody lit the two-thousand candles And they all toasted Jesus, born in a stable Then Jesus said “hey, let’s not be such strangers” |

| 3. | World of Dreams | Play | World of Dreams

| 4. | Waking Up | Play | Waking Up
Last night I was dreaming I was in my GMC
I was feeling kind of empty because it was just a ‘93 So I filled it full of fossil from the bosom of the earth Which I burned up quite a lot of on my long commute to work Where I worked at what I hated just to keep up with the bills Which I paid to meet the rising cost of feeling unfulfilled Which I felt at every moment with occasional respite Like the times that I’d go shopping or watch TV shows at night CHORUS: But I’m waking up, but I’m waking up I’m waking up from the American Dream Last night I was dreaming of the one eternal hope That my life would be improved if the economy would grow Which already was a monster on a mission to consume And was eating almost everything and running out of room And it whispered to me “mister, here’s some products that you need And the standard of your living is too low” and I agreed! So I got myself a credit card with not a penny down And a long ride on the not-so-merry-money-go-round CHORUS: Yeah, the world was like an Amoco and I said “Fill er up!” With a house, a car, a VCR, a lawn and all that stuff But I got a nagging notion that enough did not exist And at the end of every day I’d wonder “is this all there is?” And someone said “Hey, you’ve already got ten times more than the rest And six-billion other people want the little that’s still left!” But I snapped “It’s a free country and by rights it’s mine to keep And by the way, who do I pay to take away this garbage heap?” CHORUS: It seemed that the beginning of the dream was so benign, I mean All I ever wanted was a smidgen of the pie And some comfort and security and good things for my kids And, OK, to please the neighbors and my ego while I did Anyway, it’s great to be awake and feeling satisfied With seeking out the simple and the deeper things in life And with giving to the world instead of hoarding it for me Boy, I guess I’m not too excited about falling back to sleep And as crazy as it was, hey, was it a dream or not? Well, just promise not to save me if I ever start to nod Put no-doze in my coffee, throw me outside in the cold Just don’t ever say “OK now, back to bed you go!” CHORUS: |

| 12. | The String | Play | The String
I have found a hole in the center of the heart
Through which a thread goes, enters and departs It’s fastened in the middle to inside of me From where it then continues through the heart of everything So when I get a feeling like a pulling on the chest I have to ask if that was me or one of the rest Sometimes it’s painful, sometimes just a tap Sometimes it happens violently and knocks me on my back When pain is not just mine alone, that’s when I know Somebody’s tugging on the string And when I start shaking, like a tremor in the ground Or and organ pipe in rank when it’s resonating sound Such a fine emotion of such intensity Takes a hold, and I know that it can’t be only me Then I guess that someone, maybe far away Has grown a little tired of the instrument they play And somehow has discovered that universal thread And reached out a courageous hand and plucked that chord instead When life seems like it’s only music, then I know Somebody’s playing the string And sometimes when I stand beneath the sky at night I take up the slack till the string is tight And staring at the stars, I take a step or two And I see them move I think I see them move Everything’s connected like peas are in a pod Or beads upon a necklace, decorating God Going around the rosy, we’re all in the ring Hand in hand, like a strand through the heart of everything |

Before you dig in You stand and dance and sway Around the kitchen And feast your eyes, astounded by What you’ve been given Before you even Sit down In Bountiful And when you allemande With the pans and the cupboards You lapse into a trance And dance like a lover Till dinner time has slipped your mind And you can’t recover Like a drunkard Stumbling around In Bountiful And when you fold your hands You laugh Because the words escape you So when you pray You shut your mouth In Bountiful The harvest moon is high In late September And life’s in great supply Of the sweet and the tender But it’s the whole ordeal before the meal You will remember If you ever Make it down To Bountiful |
Bountiful was my favorite album of 1998.

They all just seem to make themselves I plant no seed and I tend no vine And I have no feast at harvest time CHORUS: I cut no wood I bake no bread I spin no wool To warm my head I put no paint On a canvas white To take a picture takes Less of my time I heat my home with electric wire But I still feel cold because I feed no fire And my car, it goes when my care has gas So I don’t walk slow and I don’t walk fast CHORUS: So fast Where are we going? So fast? Where are we going? Where are we going? Where are we? I’d trade my wage for a fertile field For a plow and a spade and a pauper’s yield I’d swap these streets for a single chance To drop that seed from my own bare hands Because the things I need aren’t from a shelf And the things I need don’t make themselves But I plant no seed and I tend no vine And I have no feast at harvest time No, I have no feast at harvest time |

He’s as tame as he can be Born of the western mind A child of the left-brained kind A metal car on a concrete road Is how he gets everywhere he goes An automated and a mechanized mode Is all he’s ever known In his sober land He does the dance of a modern man But sometimes, when he’s sleeping, his soul Is running with the buffalo His mind calculates another fact But his memory is searching back To something he can’t quite recall Or doesn’t remember at all Something like a spiritual trance Round and round in a circle dance Round the light of a midnight fire Freeing him as it grows higher In his sober land He does the dance of a modern man But sometimes, when he’s sleeping, his soul Is running with the buffalo Great Spirit of this broken land Have mercy on the modern man Teach him how, body and soul To go running with buffalo Buffalo Prairie below your feet The hunter’s bow Keeping your senses keen The milky way Over your traveling And the plain Is like an endless sea |

| 5. | Peppermint Wind | Play | Peppermint Wind
I have a house on pistachio hill
With chocolate rows where the garden’s tilled And candy flowers in the window sill Blowing in the peppermint wind Coconut snow in the wintertime Lemon-lime stream meandering by Cotton candy clouds in an ice blue sky Blowing in the peppermint wind And when my life is good I gather up the reasons why And step into the wood Where the mysterious hides And with a thank you in my prayer I offer my blessings to the air And let ‘em all go in the peppermint wind In the day, like a smiling torch The sun, with the rain brings the sweet corn forth And ticky tacky chimes ringing on the porch Are blowing in the peppermint wind And late at night, when the sun retires A night-owl sings on a licorice wire And whipped cream smoke from a crackling fire Blows in the peppermint wind And when my life is hard I gather up my cares and then I step into the yard And summon my gusty friend Wait for that scent to fill my nose Open my hands and let them go I let my troubles go in the peppermint wind And when my life is good.... I have a house on pistachio hill Chocolate rows where the garden’s tilled Candy flowers in the windowsill Blowing in the peppermint wind |

| 6. | Angel in the Snow | Play | Angel in the Snow
You cannot make one in the sky
Where the careless creatures fly The careless creatures fly You cannot make one in your home Where your heart is safe and dry The heart is safe and dry CHORUS: Only down on the ground in the cold Can you make, make an angel in the snow You cannot on a summer day It will only melt away Only melt away You cannot when you’re standing tall But only lowly as you lay Lowly as you lay CHORUS: You cannot make one in paradise That’s the place where the angels die Where winter seems like a distant dream And the cold has been forgotten So get your coat and venture out Find a place upon the ground A place upon the ground And when you think that you were better off inside Is when you should be falling down Falling down CHORUS: |

| 7. | River Run | Play | River Run
For countless years, or so it seems
I have been frozen in some dream An icy cage to close me in These many days that I’ve been sleeping Sleeping But now a warmer wind does blow And I begin to bend and flow I fall and something carries me Along and suddenly, I’m leaving Leaving CHORUS: All I know is I’m in motion Tossed and thrown, dropped and spun This is not slow, this is no ocean I’m on a river run If I decide and time it right I can leap high and catch some light Or launch out off a rocky wall Where, all at once, I’m free and falling Falling I hope no future, mourn no past When now is moving by so fast I am this motion I am in With every end, I am beginning Beginning CHORUS: I’ve many seasons to my life A drop of water such as I But when the sea or sky, I’ve earned I dream of rivers, and returning Returning |

| 8. | Blessed Disease | Play | Blessed Disease
Chronic amnesia, a dreadful disease
Sadly struck poor old Harry last night And now, a bit later, old Harry the hater’s Forgotten who he didn’t like CHORUS: Blessed disease that makes us forget Who is our foe, not our friend Blessed disease, if we’re lucky, you’ll spread And strike every head So we can start over again A victim names Sawyer had lunch with her lawyer And just had begun to explain “I’ll sue them!” she said, then got hit in the head And forgot who exactly to blame CHORUS: Who is just different Who is the same Who is the problem Wipe it away, wipe it away Sergeant Divine, stationed on the front line Took a bullet while drawing his gun And clutching his chest, asked the man to his left “Can you tell me which country I’m from?” CHORUS: |
|||
| 9. | Beat Your Drum Slowly | Play | Beat Your Drum Slowly
If you’re in need of some good wood
You can find some in the forest From a tree that’s been standing It’s a strong one, you will know it Make it hollow Fill it with your soul If you’re in need of some good skin You can get some from an animal With a voice like a lion And the toughness of an old bull Stretch it tight Over that hole and Beat your drum slowly Beat your drum slowly Beat your drum slowly If you’re in need of a mallet Use your left hand, use your right hand You won’t need any teacher Just desire, nothing more than that Flesh and bone are All you need to know to Beat your drum slowly Beat your drum slowly Beat your drum slowly There is a forest There is a beast And there’s a voice for those who Think they cannot speak If you’re in need of a rhythm Just be quiet, you will hear it Like a dream you remember in your sleep You are always so very near it Listen, down deep, and Let your fingers roll Beat your drum slowly... Beat your drum slowly Beat your drum slowly |

| 10. | Story of My Life | Play | Story of My Life
I’ve heard of the lovely maiden
And the shiny pot of gold The hero that killed the dragon And the fall of mighty Rome I’ve read the Shakespeare tragedies And of the first Atlantic flight Now would anybody, please Tell me the story of my life? I’ve heard of enchanting places But not the beauty of my home Alluring hands and faces But not the power in my own Tell a tale of mystery And the adventure that is mine Please, would anybody please Tell me the story of my life? CHORUS: Like a child still awake Even though the hour’s late I’ve spent a lifetime open-eared But not heard what I long to hear (Bedtime stories in my ears But still one more I long to hear) Storyteller, can you spin The very story I am in? What is the world afloat in? Who was it, caused my heart to form? Was there a promise spoken On the day that I was born? What is the spell what makes me free? Who is the villain I must fight? Please, can anybody, please Tell me the story of my life? CHORUS |

| 11. | Molly O'Malley's | Play | Molly O'Malley's
Molly O’Malley’s is not too far from here
Where not a soul, the story goes, ever pays for beer At Molly O’Malley’s the patrons understand That the player’s fee is a pint or three So everyone’s in the band Everybody’s in the band Some join in with voices, some with pipes or reeds Some in the band clap their hands or laugh and slap their knees Some are still and listen with attentive eyes and ears And it’s always strange how the music changes When they disappear When they disappear CHORUS: Over the doorway, painted bold A question begs your pardon “Is this a place of many souls Or just one very large one?” Over the bar, another reads “Are there many songs Or just one that goes on and on?” At Molley O’Malley’s they go chair to chair And each one croons a little tune they would like to share Some are sad, some happy, and singing has its rules That you can’t be shy and you cannot lie But you sing a song that’s true Sing a song that’s true CHORUS: When the night is over, before the last farewell They find the jar on the bar and kindly tip themselves At Molley O’Malley’s, the patrons understand That the player’s fee is a pint or three So everyone’s in the band Everybody’s in the band |

| 1. | The Promised Land | Play | The Promised Land
There’ll be no more crying, only laughter
There’ll be nothing that we cannot have There’ll be no more pain, but only pleasure In the promised land There’ll be no more questions, only answers There’ll be nothing we don’t understand In the highly-favored ever after In the promised land Are you hoping for it? Barely coping for it? Are you waiting for life to be over for it? Are you paying for it with today? Somewhere in the hoping, something’s given Which knows nothing of a future plan Somewhere in the dying and the living Is the promised land In the hellish heat and healing water In a heavy heart and open hand Is creation kissing it’s creator Is the promised land Are you hoping for it? Barely coping for it? Are you waiting for life to be over for it? Well I hope you’re ready for it 'Cause it’s here |

| 2. | Captain of My Life | Play | Captain of My Life
I’ve stood at starboard bow
Thinking how beautiful the waves I’ve lingered at the stern Where I have yearned to return the way I came I have toiled down below In the dark and cold When these hands were made to row I’ve been atop the mast Holding fast and looking out ahead But I’ve been unconcerned And never learned where this ship was led Now on every side I see What I’ve never seen Such a storm surrounding me CHORUS: This ship could be going down And I see no sign of ground Will I be, before I drown The captain of my life? I can do many things And many things I’ve done since I began But fear has sailed with me And crippled me from taking the command Now despair is in the hold As the water rolls Fear is waiting for my soul CHORUS: |

| 3. | Wasting Time | Play | Wasting Time
Autumn day, misty haze hangin’ in the sky
Fresh out of bed, the day ahead is cluttering my mind Coffeed and deodorized, and I’m out the door I get a funny feeling that I’ve been through this before Like a finely tuned machine manufacturing the day Careful not to let a wandering thought get in they way Returning home, all alone, a couple prime time shows and then Back in bed, and soon, I dread, I’m gonna do it all again I earn my keep and mange to live fairly comfortably And I make my contribution to our great society I take every advantage, I spend wisely every dime And I may rest, but my life don’t have room for wastin’ time Autumn night, firelight dancing’ on my eyes Steppin’ to the songs I sing on weathered railroad ties Skippin’ stones off steel to watch the sparks cut through the night And my two best friends in the world are walkin’ by my side There really is no reason for this party thrown for three Our one qualification is it’s where we want to be No topic or agenda, and no way to deny We ain’t achieving or producing, we must simply wastin’ time And who’s to say no profit will result from this ordeal? I’m a richer man by plenty if you judge by how I feel And if time could be well wasted and thoughts could be well spent And friendship is a gift to share, then I can be content If your life gets busy and you can’t find time for you And people don’t care who you are as long as they like what you do Find a precious friend or two and your favorite place to be Or make it to the railroad, and you can waste some time with me |

| 4. | Why Pay Your Money | Play | Why Pay Your Money
I made my money and I took it to the driving-fast man
I said I would like to be driving just as fast as I can I need some speed and I need to be bad I need to win respect that I never had Why pay your money for what does not satisfy? I took my new car and I drove it to the looking-good man I said “please make me more attractive than the person I am” He sold me some muscles and he shaved down my nose Then got me fitted in some really neat clothes Why pay your money for what does not satisfy? Now I am driving, I’m finally arriving Now I am looking really very good Now I am wondering what else to be buying I took what I had left and I gave it to the happiness man I said I would like to be happy, as happy as I can He said, “boy, why did you come to me last?” Then he just smiled and he handed it back And he said “Why pay your money for what does not satisfy?” Satisfy |

| 5. | Gitchi Gummi | Play | Gitchi Gummi
Are you saying that the sky is wide?
Are you saying that the sunlight likes to play Upon your waves? Are you saying that the time goes fast? Are you saying that my life won’t last too long Before I’m gone CHORUS: Gitchi Gummi, Gitchi, Gitchi Gummi Is there something that you’re saying to me? You look a little bit like God almighty Such a frightening thing Keep on talking to me Gitchi Gummi I need a measure of your holy mystery Take me to your shore Set me down and pour Your mighty water over me Are you saying I don’t know too much, But if I don’t know the earth is such a jewel I’m such fool? And are you maybe staring back at me Saying I am made of earth and water too? I’m just like you CHORUS: |
|||
| 6. | Uncrowded Sky | Play | Uncrowded Sky
No, no, no, can’t let go
I love them so So I sung when I was young Of all the things to have and hold I’d gather them around me Cling to them and cry “Don’t lift me up! Don’t lift me up!” Important names, exciting games All began to seem the same I got bored and wanted more And when I asked, you gave and gave “Take them all away from me!” Has now become my cry “And lift me up Lift me up To uncrowded sky” No, no, no, truth be told I can’t see you any more This stuff of mine, a mountain high Keeps my eyes from meeting yours Ceaseless expectations Are all my life’s about Lift me up, lift me up Where did you, the giver go? I am buried in this hole With a fortune for a grave And who’d believe I’d find you there In such simplicity of air? I used to dream of mighty me Floating on a self-made sea Success and fame, my middle names Claiming what’s mine rightfully Beneath this cluttered ocean Of all my answered cries Now I dream of you and me And uncrowded sky |

| 7. | Peter, Peter | Play | Peter, Peter
Where I’m from, we don’t think of dying
We see his face and our feet are flying To the place where the walls are made of things We lock the door and ignore our fearing While his eyes, through the wall, are peering And now and then, one of us will start to sing CHORUS: Peter, don’t you miss my number Where it’s written in your golden ledger Peter, don’t you miss my number now Peter, see that you will know me when I come to call at the gates of heaven Peter, don’t you miss my number now Where I’m from, we don’t see the old ones Put their lives in a place where no one Has to see such a horrifying thing But where they live, the walls are falling down You can see the light and you can hear the sound Of the song an astounding number sing CHORUS: |
|||
| 8. | Right on Down the Line | Play | Right on Down the Line
The sun is hiding in the misty morning
Soon you’ll see it shine And further on it will be lowering Right on down the line Six o’clock and the whistle blows The old conductor smiles Another day to keep on rolling Right on down the line CHORUS: Don’t fear change It’s not to be afraid of Welcome strange It’s the stuff that life is made of Do you believe in a life of motion Changing all the time? And do you plan to keep on growing Right on down the line? If you think you’re standing still It’s only in your mind Look out the window and you’ll see you’re moving Right on down the line CHORUS: It’s not about not living long in The places that you choose It’s just about not hanging on when You’re only passing through You’re only passing through Other trains, they stop or slow or they Leave some folks behind But everybody’s riding this one Right on down the line Six o’clock and the whistle blows The old conductor smiles Another day to keep on rolling Right on down the line |

| 9. | Walk with a Lighter Touch | Play | Walk with a Lighter Touch
The earth will be going
Before we know it Throw down your guns, people We’ve already won the battle for survival CHORUS: Do we know what we are walking on? Do we know what we all live upon? Can we walk with a lighter touch And live with a wiser love? Enchanting blue magic Is this little planet And blessed are we, people Blessed to be here upon it CHORUS: Take up that love, people We've only begun the battle for survival CHORUS: |

| 10. | Evil Be Gone | Play | Evil Be Gone
I am a child and I'm pretty smart
But I'm just a little afraid of the dark Sometimes I have to go outside at night Out to the back yard, where there is no light CHORUS: When I step out the door And I can't take one step more Because I am too much afraid It's then that I've been taught to say Evil be gone After I say it, I open my eyes Then I take a deep breath and step out in the night It's still dark around me, I still walk real slow But it makes me feel better, like I'm not alone CHORUS And Mom and Dad say it's true that Sometimes they say it, too So it shouldn't make me feel strange To say, every time I'm afraid Evil be gone |
